Using KLayout: Installation, Connection to Lumerical, and Introduction to WDM - Part 1 (Installation)

Introduction to KLayout
KLayout is a free, open-source tool that can be used for PDK and Foundry applications. Let's start with a knowledge base article available on the ANSYS website. In this example, our goal is to design a WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing).
Installation Steps
We will use the Numerical Foundry Lone Foundry PDK. The following steps outline the installation process:
- Install the Lone Foundry for KLayout and Interconnect.
- In KLayout, install the SciApic tools and ANSYS Numerical Foundation.
- For KLayout installation, follow these steps:
- Open KLayout.
- Select Tools and then Manage Packages.
- Install the SciApic and Python packages for KLayout and ANSYS Numerical.
- Navigate to your Numerical files directory and copy its contents to the KLayout directory.
Verifying Installation
To verify the installation:
- Open KLayout and ensure the Numerical tab is visible.
- If the tab is not visible, ensure that the contents of the Numerical directory have been correctly copied to the KLayout folder.
Connecting to Numerical Interconnect
For the Numerical Interconnect part, install the Compact Model Library (CML):
- Open Numerical Interconnect.
- Right-click on the design key and select Install Numerical File.
- Install the LUM400K Layout CML by downloading the file and copying it to the specified directory.

For the compact model library, right-click on the design key in the numerical interconnect and install the numerical file. Download the LUM400K package and copy it to the numerical interconnect directory.
